Indirect Tax News Update - Volume IV Issue V, May 2017
Central Government shifted the liability to pay service tax on ‘importer’ defined u/s 2(26) of Customs Act in respect of services provided or agreed to be provided by a person located in non-taxable territory to a person located in nontaxable territory by way of transportation of goods by a vessel from place outside India up to Customs clearance station in India w.e.f April 23rd.

Service tax is exempted on services to educational institution such as transportation of students, catering, security, housekeeping services, services relating to admission or conduct of examination, applicable only to pre-school educational institutions and higher secondary schools or equivalent institutions.

Indirect Tax News Update - Volume IV Issue III, March 2017
Finance ministry TRU circular clarified that no service tax is applicable on transportation of goods by vessel which is intended for transshipment to any country outside India. As per Rule 10 of Place of Provision of Services Rules 2012, place of provision of services of transportation of goods by air / sea, other than by mail or courier will be the destination of goods.

Indirect Tax News Update - Volume IV Issue II, February 2017
Ministry of Finance notified Service tax (Second Amendment) Rules, 2017 with effect from January 30, 2017. The Service tax for the months of December 2016 and January 2017 in respect of online information and database access or retrieval (OIDAR) services provided from non-taxable territory to non-assessee online recipients, shall be paid by March 6, 2017.

Indirect Tax News Update - Volume IV Issue I, January 2017
Finance Ministry amended Rule 4C of Service Tax rules, 1994 allowing to issue online invoices not authenticated by digital signature upto January 31, 2017 by a person located in non– taxable territory providing online information and database access or retrieval services to a non-assessee online recipient located in taxable territory .
